Want some banana peel with that garlic?

We wrote the other day about garlic being touted as a psoriasis remedy. So we may as well give banana peels equal time.

We agree with Dr. Gott that since it is "safe, cheap and harmless," it merits a mention, if only for laughs.

But this constant drumbeat in the media of silly 'remedies' for psoriasis raises a serious question, whether this harms our ability to get Congress and health insurers to take psoriasis seriously. If banana peels, garlic, etc. can do the trick, why 'waste' precious money on biomedical research and expensive new FDA-approved therapies?

Millions of Americans with psoriasis are hurting. The psoriasis community must be careful we don't hurt ourselves with this incessant chatter about outlandish alleged remedies, when what we really need is more National Institutes of Health research funding and insurance coverage for FDA-approved treatments proven to help.

Remember FDA and medical research are BIG businesses. That's why millions are spent in research, lab business, doctors office, ...it is a cycle. There are great natural remedies but of course, not FDA aproved, because natural means you can get it without a lab, a doctor , or FDA making profit!! I just started using the banana last night and did not use any cream or lotion to see if any improvement. I see today a less dry skin. I am going to give it a try. Scratching is a big NO. I'll go bananas now. Thanks

Yes, we would encourage curious psoriasis patients to give give the banana peel method a try, because it is virtually free, harmless, and easy to test.

But the above comment also reflects some common misunderstandings about "natural remedies." In fact, the natural remedies being hawked on the internet, on AM radio and in ads in the Sunday newspaper inserts do NOT require FDA approval, and that's part of the problem. The companies selling these natural remedies can say almost anything and they don't even need to be able to back it up with proof or testing. Congress had some good reasons to exempt these very profitable 'alternative therapy' companies from regulation, but it has also created problems. Huge amounts of money are wasted each year by desperate patients on products that simply don't work.

But the commenter expresses a frustration felt by many people with psoriasis. We don't know why we have this dreaded disease, and we crave both a cure and, frankly, someone to 'blame' that can help us make sense of this seemingly random curse that has befallen us. So we try to blame the FDA or Big Pharma. But FDA doctors take a pay CUT to work there (it's a government agency), and psoriasis has been with us for thousands of years, long before Big Pharma came along. If there were already a cure for psoriasis, we would all know it by now.

The best we can do for now is fight for more research. Why not click on the "GO" button on the left side of this page and write your lawmakers right now demanding more psoriasis research.

I've had psoriasis for over 20 yrs. I've done phototherapy & steroid treatments, which were expensive, & only somewhat helpful. I started using banana peels a month ago, & this is the best my psoriasis has ever looked. "If there were already a cure for psoriasis, we would all know it by now," is not necessarily true...you can't make money off of banana peels, so nobody is going to market it. There are many inexpensive, natural remedies that are lost because people want a golden pill that will cure their ailments.

Thanks for your comment and it's good news that your skin is improving!

How about this, dear readers? If rubbing banana peels on your psoriasis cures your psoriasis, please let us know!

If it does not, why not total up how much you spent on the banana test, and make a tax deductible donation to us so we can expand our work to get the millions more dollars in government medical research we need if we are going to finally find a cure for the genetic and immune system malfunctions that cause psoriasis?

Of course, you are eating the bananas so it's basically free, but if everyone who tried the banana test sent us $8, we could amplify our voice before Congress quite nicely.....
