As Congress is approaching $1,000,000,000,000 in taxpayer-funded bailouts to companies run by people who made bad decisions, biomedical research funding by the federal government has been stagnant for nearly 5 years. The latest Congressional effort, to give another $50 billion to the Big Three automakers, equals almost two years of the entire federal government’s investment in medical research.
So we were thrilled to see Chairman John Dingell (D-MI) suggest that an increase in funding for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) should be part of the next stimulus package.
“We hope Congress will remember the many dividends that investments in medical research bring as they determine how best to spend taxpayers’ money,” said Michael Paranzino, president of Psoriasis Cure Now. “It’s obviously of concern how quickly government resources are being distributed to for-profit companies, as NIH funding has been stuck in neutral for the last several years. When we visit with the new Congress in the months ahead, we intend to make the case that if there is $1 TRILLION available for poorly-run businesses, there should certainly be $20 million invested in psoriasis research.”
