I am a college professor with severe plaque psoriasis. The psoriasis covers my arms, which has been a challenge in the classroom. I do not cover my psoriasis but instead discuss it with my students about two weeks into the semester. I discuss psoriasis because my students see it on me and they are curious about it but they do not feel comfortable asking me about it. I teach communication, including the dreaded public speaking, so as part of an example presentation that I give at the beginning of every semester I talk about psoriasis.
For most of my students, the presentation satisfies their curiosity. I explain that they can gauge my stress by how dark the blotches on my arm get, and we share a laugh. I tell them that they benefit since they will know if teacher is having a bad day and that they should tread lightly. I have also had many students approach me after class to share with me that they or their spouse or child suffers from psoriasis. I invite them to talk with me about it and have made many meaningful connections this way!###
