Description and Comments
Bicillin L-A is a form of penicillin, an antibiotic that fights bacterial infections. It is already FDA approved and being used to treat a variety of infectious diseases. Studies are currently underway to see if Bicillin L-A might help psoriasis patients, too. Although psoriasis is not an infectious disease, there is considerable evidence that psoriasis can be triggered by infection with a type of bacteria called streptococcus. The initial onset of psoriasis as well as psoriasis flares are often associated with streptococcal throat infections (strep throat). It is possible that some patients with chronic plaque psoriasis may have a low-level untreated streptococcal infection. Treatment of these patients with an antibiotic such as Bicillin L-A that can eliminate streptococcal infections might alleviate their psoriasis symptoms.
