Cimzia is an injectable biologic medication that has the same molecular target as Enbrel, Remicade, Humira, and Simponi: Tumor Necrosis Factor-alpha (TNF-alpha). TNF-alpha is an inflammation promoting substance that is produced abnormally in psoriasis patients. Blocking TNF-alpha function has proven to be highly effective at reducing psoriasis symptoms. Cimzia is FDA approved for the treatment of Crohn's Disease and rheumatoid arthritis and performed very well in Phase II studies of patients with moderate to severe plaque psoriasis. A Phase III study of Cimzia in patients with psoriatic arthritis is underway.
