Description and Comments

Indigo naturalis ointment is derived from a plant (Strobilanthes formosanus Moore) used in traditional Chinese medicine. Taken internally indigo naturalis can have toxic side effects, but a 2008 study demonstrated that a topical formulation is non-toxic and effective against psoriasis. About three-quarters of the study participants had clear or nearly clear skin after 12 weeks of use. The only drawbacks were temporary staining of skin and clothing and the ointment's unpleasant odor.
