Description and Comments

Protopic (tacrolimus), like Elidel (pimecroliums), is part of the calcineurin inhibitor family of immunosuppressants. An oral form of tacrolimus is widely used to prevent rejection of organ transplants. Protopic, a cream formulation of tacrolimus, is FDA approved to treat eczema and is in the late phases of testing as a psoriasis treatment. In one study, psoriasis cleared or almost cleared in about one-third of patients who used tacrolimus cream for eight weeks.
