Description and Comments
One of the currently most promising approaches to treating psoriasis involves blocking the abnormal cell division of the T cell, an important component of the immune system. R3421/BCX-4208 blocks T cells by inhibiting a molecule called purine
nucleoside phosphorylase (PNP); it is the first drug that interferes with T cells in this way. R3421/BCX-4208 is a traditional "small molecule" drug, not a biologic. Phase I tests in healthy volunteers that investigated the safety of various doses of R3421/BCX-4208 were completed successfully, and tests in psoriasis patients are underway.
